Netherlands Centre for Coastal Research
A proposal with this title has been submitted Thursday 17th of February 2022 to the NWO call for proposal for Large Scale Research Infrastructure (LSRI). The proposal is submitted by the DANUBIUS-NL consortium under the lead of University Utrecht, Prof. Dr. Hans Middelkoop. For the first time ever, NCR en NCK partners have joined forces to realize such high-profile initiative. Drafting the proposal was also financially supported by NCK.
The proposal in 100 words:
Deltas and coastal plains are attractive places to live: fertile, flat, open to the sea. These lowlands are, however, also vulnerable to climate change and sea level rise. To better predict how deltas will develop in the future we need a thorough understanding of how organisms, currents, waves, water and sediment together shape the delta landscape. This so-called biogeomorphology lies at the heart of Δ-ENIGMA. The program provides measurement infrastructure for intensive observational and experimental research of the Dutch Delta. This will improve our ability to predict future development of our delta in times of climate change, to ensure safe and sustainable living for the generations to come.
Delta-ENIGMA forms a crucial element in our strategy to strengthen data-driven science in the field of water management, and it will bring the Netherlands globally in a forefront position regarding research infrastructure for studying biogeomorphological processes in engineered deltas. And it will serve as a basis for the Dutch contribution to the pan-European environmental research infrastructure DANUBIUS-RI.
Op 27 januari organiseerde Deltares onder de vlag van het Nederlands Centrum voor Kustonderzoek en Ecoshape een succesvol en goed bezocht online kweldersymposium (180 aanmeldingen uit 80 organisaties). Het was een inspirerend programma met veel presentaties en perspectieven, alsook veel gemeenschappelijke ideeën. Via de chat kon iedereen zijn/haar inbreng geven en dat werd ook volop gedaan.

Achtergrond: De ruimte in Nederland is krap, dus het optimaliseren van de inrichting van landschappen en het gebruik van de baten is van groot belang. Dit geldt ook voor het gebied dat de overgang van land naar zee behelst, het intergetijdengebied. Kwelders en Nature-based Solutions kunnen bijdragen aan doelstellingen op het gebied van waterveiligheid, klimaat en biodiversiteit. Tegelijkertijd kan dit ervoor zorgen dat de druk op het gebied groter wordt en oorspronkelijk gebruik misschien verandert. De laatste jaren en decennia wordt steeds meer bekend over de waarde van de verschillende ecosysteemdiensten van kwelders door onderzoek en door de uitvoering van pilot projecten. Onlangs zijn verschillende (onderzoeks)projecten gehonoreerd waarin kwelders wederom een grote rol spelen (o.a. REST-COAST, Living Dikes, Living on the Edge). Tijdens het Kweldersymposium versterken we de verbinding tussen onderzoek en praktijk. De centrale vraag is: Hoe kunnen gewenste ecosysteemdiensten succesvol gecombineerd worden in huidige en nieuwe kwelders/Nature-based Solutions?
We invite you for the NCK themeday on 'Dynamic dune management in practice' to share and discuss our latest insight in dynamic dune management from recent projects like Spanjaards Duin, Hondsbossche Duinen and Prins Hendrik Zanddijk. In these projects one of the largest challenges is the balance between allowing dynamics for nature and flood safety functions. And, since these projects have created dune areas from scratch, they require an adaptive approach. We would like to discuss the value of these kinds of projects for coastal research in general and the Dutch coastal landscape. We hope the lessons will inspire future applications. And we are proud to show you the area of Spanjaards Duin at the start of the themeday!
