You are one mouse click away from knowing more about the contribution of vegetation to flood risk reduction at any site in the world! Join our one day interactive conference to explore the latest scientific approaches towards nature-based flood defences together with the FAST team.

The MI-SAFE viewer has been developed as part of the FAST project (Foreshore Assessment using Space Technology, fast.openearth.eu/) and is a valuable tool to assess the presence of vegetation and its contribution to wave attenuation anywhere in the world. Data on topography, bathymetry, vegetation cover and change, storm surge and wave statistics are derived from earth observation imagery, global databases and numerical modelling. Field data collected during the FAST project have been used to calibrate our model (XBeach) and its vegetation parameters. Next to global, large-scale data we have derived detailed and more accurate data for specific sites (Expert Level of services). Tailor-made solutions are offered to fit the user’s requirements for implementing nature-based flood defences.

Our 1 day conference will demonstrate the MI-SAFE viewer and keynote speakers will give their perspective on nature-based flood defences and the use of Earth Observation imagery in combination with modelling. There will be an opportunity to get better understanding of the data, to explore the open source structures and to use the MI-SAFE viewer in your own area of interest, while getting assistance of the FAST team to get started and for questions. Also, you will meet other professionals working in the field of nature-based flood defences, earth observation data, XBeach modelling and more!

Information about the FAST project and MI-SAFE viewer:

  • The FAST project is executed by a consortium of Deltares, University of Cambridge, University of Cadiz, Royal Dutch Institute for Sea Research (NIOZ) and GeoEcoMar.
  • The project collected field data from 7 study sites, 2 in the UK, 2 in the Netherlands, 2 in Romania and 1 in Spain, resulting in detailed, calibrated wave attenuation information on saltmarshes.
  • Calibration of the wave attenuation parameters has been extrapolated to get a best estimate for the role of vegetation in flood risk reduction worldwide.
  • The global scale data is available free of charge!
  • The viewer is unique for its global scale of vegetation and bathymetry data, even where data is scarse.
  • You can couple underlying data-layers to other toolboxes like Coastal Hazard Wheel, Aquamonitor and RISC-KIT.
  • You are invited to join the FAST community for free to get updates on the MI-SAFE viewer and FAST events.
  • You may interact with the FAST consortium to get support for using the MI-SAFE viewer for free.
