Delft University of Technology and the Dutch community for coastal research welcomes you to The Netherlands for the 8th edition of the Coastal Dynamics Conference, held from 28 June until 2 July 2021.

The conference theme is “Shaping the Future of our Coasts”, and we invite scientists and practitioners from all over the world to contribute their insights and research results of how nature and humans are shaping our coasts, now and in the future.

Sand Motor

The conference will feature a special one-day session on July 1 about the Sand Motor, a large-scale nourishment on the Delfland coast in The Netherlands. After 10 years of research we present the results during Coastal Dynamics.

Conference Goals

The Coastal Dynamics conference series advances the community's understanding of coastal processes, engineering and management, spanning a variety of scales and environments including sandy, rocky and muddy coasts, inlets and estuaries.

Scientific Scope

We expect around 250 participants from all over the world. Participants are invited to submit abstracts for oral or poster presentation on the following topics (indicate two on your abstract).

  • Coastal hydrodynamics (waves, tides and surges)
  • Coastal sediment transport (subaqueous and aeolian)
  • Estuarine processes, fine sediments and vegetation
  • Foreshore, beach and dune morphodynamics
  • Coastal observations and monitoring
  • Coastal management and risk assessments
  • Coastal nourishments and interventions
  • Long-term coastal change
  • Coasts and climate change
  • Nature-based solutions.

Conference format: Fully online

Due to the current COVID-19 restrictions and rules set out by the Dutch government, at this moment we are preparing to host the Coastal Dynamics 2021 conference fully online, for all participants. We will make sure that an online format will run as smoothly and interactively as possible.

In case the situation improves and the governmental restrictions allow for it, we will offer a hybrid format in which participants can decide to join the conference either online or in person in Delft. In that case, participants who wish to travel to Delft from abroad should check the Dutch Government travel advisory.

The final decision on the conference format (fully online or hybrid) will be taken on 15 May 2021, at the latest. All participants will then be notified and given the opportunity to change their registration free of charge once (from online to live attendance or vice versa).

We understand that some participants from abroad need to make a decision on online/live attendance before May 15th. In that case, we advise to register for online attendance, as this is the allowed format under the present rules. If you have already registered for live attendance, that is also no problem - you will be able to change to online attendence free of charge when the final decision has been taken.

Please do not hesitate to contact us if there are any questions/doubts/suggestions on the conference format (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.).
